What is a PCT ?

  •  Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals rely on patient care technicians to assist with the critical day-to-day care some patients require.
  • PCT's provide hands-on assistance to serve patients' basic needs, which greatly impacts the lives of their patients and their patients' families. As a patient care tech, you may be able to perform some or all of the following tasks:
  • Provide basic patient care — bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc.
  • Acquire, distribute and administer patient care supplies
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms
  • Accommodate any additional patient needs
  • Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families,
particularly coping with grief and death
  • PCT's make a difference every day

Common duties of a medical assistant include administrative and clinical tasks, including:

  • Checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure
  • Answering phone calls and questions
  • Assisting providers with exams and procedures
  • Administering injections or medications
  • Working in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Performing EKG, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures
  • Taking patient vital signs

Why become a PCT ?

  •  Do you have passion for healthcare? Are you looking to work in an exciting and rewarding career?  Becoming a CCMA gives you the ability to grow personally and professionally in the healthcare field.
  • If you’re wondering what that could look like, here are a few benefits of becoming a PCT; Job demand and stability, shift and time flexibility, emotionally rewarding, course affordability, enriching work environments, opportunities to specialize, travel opportunities, an ever-growing job market, continuing education and expansion into other healthcare careers.
  • PCT's enjoy a steady income, vast job opportunities, flexible work schedules, more days off, career growth, respected and rewarding work.
  • PCT's use their work hours to apply to Registered Nursing School, Physician Assistant school and other healthcare degree programs.
  • We are proud to be the career school of choice for nursing students from Texas Tech University, Texas Women's University and several other Community Colleges in the area.

Job Market

Benefits

Level Up with Stacked Credentials and Certificates

Stacking your credentials and earning specialty certificates can increase job opportunities available to you in allied health. By earning more than one credential or certificate, you show potential employers you’re willing to go the extra mile. It proves that you’re work-ready in multiple areas, making you a versatile employee and an asset to their organization.

Many PCT's stack the following credentials with their PCT credential:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
  • Certified EKG Technician (CET)
  • Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

 Other Benefits of certification:

  • more responsibility + job opportunity
  • Healthcare is evolving, and patient care technicians are in higher demand than ever before. Patient care technicians are also facing increasing responsibilities in their role due to a shortage of LPNs in hospitals combined with the increasing patient hospitalizations. Patient care technicians who are NHA certified (CPCT/A) are better prepared to tackle these responsibilities than CNAs or PCTs who are not certified

Other job titles with scopes that a CPCT/A can fulfill or exceed include:

  • Certified Patient Care Assistant
  • Home Health Aid
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Patient Care Associate
